A LARGE GERMAN SILVER TUREEN WITH COVER ON STAND
Berlin, maker's mark of Fredrick August Niess, struck on base, tureen and cover, circa 1802
The oval stand plain and slightly sunken with rising centre decorated to the rim with a band of applied foliate ornament, the tureen decorated to the oval base with a cast band of palm leaves, the oval urn-shaped body mainly plain and applied with a further band of trailing foliate and floral ornament enhanced with female masks to the front and back, the two plain double-scroll handles extending from Bacchanal masks, the tented cover with a similar band of applied foliage below gadrooning and with a palm tree finial, with gilt-interior - 51cm high (5640gr)
