Lot Essay

The design for this chimney-piece relates to patterns published in M. Pergolesi's Designs for various ornaments, 1784, while the central tablet derives from the Adam brothers' 'antique' manner of the 1760s. The pilaster pattern features on a chimney-piece installed in Temple Row, Birmingham, around 1780, and the latter derived from engraved patterns illustrated on a trade sheet of metal-rollers Messrs John and Obadiah Westwood, of Great Charles Street, Birmingham.
