Lot Essay

S.M.S. Wettin was a pre-'dreadnought' battleship of the Wittelsbach class built for the Imperial German Navy by Schicau at Wilhelmshaven and launched on 6th June 1901. Named for the ruling house of Saxony, she displaced 12,596 tons and measured 416 feet in length with a 75 foot beam. Impressively armed and capable of 17½ knots at full steam, she entered service in October 1902 but had become obsolete by 1911 when she became an artillery school ship. Later converted into a depot ship for mine-sweeping launches and modified to carry twelve F-boats on her main foredeck, she survived the Great War only to be scapped in 1921-22.
