Lot Essay

Opdenhoff received his initial training from Andreas Schelfhout, and became skilled at capturing light in his paintings. He further developed the specialism of marine painting under the instruction of J.C. Schotel (1787-1838). Fascinated by seascapes, the artist dedicated his further artistic career to this genre.
The present lot, in which a storm threatens the livelihood of fishermen, is a perfect example of the artist's ability to enhance the story told by the use of dramamtic light effects.
