THE SEVRES PLAQUE
The indistinct painter's mark is almost certainly either that of Nicolas Bulidon (circa 1750 - after 1817) or Edmé-Francois Bouillat (active 1758-1810)
The closely related plaque in the Frick Collection, which is convincingly attributed to Bouillat (T. Dell, The Frick Collection, VI, Furniture and Bronzes, New York, 1992, pp. 41-50), is painted with a very similar basket of flowers and can be identified with the two plaques sold to the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre in 1783, their gilding executed by Michel-Barnabé Chauvaux (Chauvaux père)
Another closely related plaque, almost certainly painted by Edmé-Francois Bouillat (Bouillat père) and mounted on a contemporary guéridon, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 17 June 1987, lot 27. Related baskets of flowers also appear on a Carlin mechanical table in the Wallace Collection (R. Savill, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain in the Wallace Collection, London, 1988, II, C506, pp. 887-9), and a Carlin table à ecrire in the Kress Collection (C.C. Dauterman et.al., Complete Catalogue of the Samuel H. Kress Collection, Aylesbury, 1964, no. 31, figs. 133-4, pp. 167-8). Two plaques, almost certainly executed by the identical hand, are recorded:- one, displayed upon a sécrétaire à abattant by Adam Weisweiler, was offered anonymously in these Rooms, 17 June 1987, lot 62, while another, of oval form and sharing the unusual ribbon-tie around the gilt border, was sold from the Espirito Santo Collection at Sotheby's London, 9 July 1985, lot 146
TABLES EN CHIFFONIERE
This table en chiffonière is directly inspired by Martin Carlin's celebrated design. Commencing in 1771, Carlin seems to have executed this model almost exclusively for the marchand-merciers Simon-Philippe Poirier and his successor, Dominique Daguerre. A closely related table, formerly in the Flahaut Collection, is discussed in F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, 1970, no. 297, pp. 52-4. For a full discussion of tables en auges and en chiffonières see A. Pradère, French Furniture Makers, London, 1989, p. 359
