Boat-shaped with foliate scroll handle and dolphin's head spout, the sides repoussé and chased with scenes from the Old Testament of Jacob wrestling with an angel, Jacob's dream, Elia and the ravens, with two hinged drop ring fruit and laurel scroll handles - 40 cm long

Lot Essay

Various functions have been suggested for this unusual object. The most likely suggestion is that it was used for rinsing the hands as a ewer, possibly made for the Guild of the Boatmen which was very powerful in Dantzig.
