AN IMPERIAL FRENCH ENAMELLED GOLD AND HARDSTONE VINAIGRETTE
Paris 1809-1819, makers's mark "H" in a lozenge, possibly for Claude-François Héruville

Oval vinaigrette, the base and cover of carnelian, the lid carved with a high relief profile of Emperor Napoléon I crowned with a laurel wreath, in a gold mount with blue enamel surround, the gold sides chased with an osier pattern highlighted and edged in translucent blue, the pierced gold grille engraved with circles on crosses -- 35 mm wide
Provenance
Given by Emperor Napoléon I to his second wife, Marie-Louise (1791-1847), Empress of France 1810-1815, and later Duchess of Parma; given by her to her librarian and former Garçon de la Chambre Michel Louge (b.1787) on the occasion of his retirement of service in 1845; acquired from the grand-son of the latter by L. Sourdier of Paris; acquired via Monsieur Houzeau of Le Vieux Paris by Mrs George S. Amory, New York, in 1928 (sold with accompanying documentation in morocco folder)
