A ROMAN MICRO-MOSAIC PLAQUE
Rome circa 1810, attributed to Filippo Puglieschi

Circular plaque depicting a panther attacking a kid, against a riverside landscape background -- 71 mm diam., gilt-metal mount within a rectangular ebonised wood frame

Lot Essay

The scene depicted is after a painting by the Bohemian artist Wenceslas Peter (1742-1829) who spent his entire working life in Rome, patronised by the Roman aristocracy. His work was the principal iconographic source for Puglieschi's work. A similar plaque was sold in our London rooms, "The Nineteenth Century", 20 February 1992, lot 137.
