Circular box, the independent cover inset with an enamel miniature depicting Love nourished by Hope, a semi-nude young lady with an anchor flanked by two putti, in a landscape, the base and sides with blue aventurine-glass panels; the borders chased with bands of lozenges alternating with foliage on a matted ground -- 80 mm diam.

Lot Essay

Another version of this scene in the taste of Angelica Kauffmann, an enamel by Henry Adam signed and dated 1798, is on the cover of a Swiss snuff-box in the Louvre (illustrated in Serge Grandjean, Les tabatières du musée du Louvre, Paris 1981, opp. p. 29, nr 535.
