'For over forty years, Adam Töpffer went out every year on month-long excursions (in the French departments next to Geneva - Savoie, Ain - and to Vaud and Valais cantons) to sketch fresh models of people, animals, buildings, trees, flowers etc. which he would afterwards include as separate items into his paintings. The deontological conception that Töpffer had of his profession made him use his drawings sparingly, only once or twice, and his models were thus always renewed. This way of working (and the small amount of well-reproduced Töpffer-works) makes an exact identification of where the drawing has been used a difficult task.'
We are grateful to Dr. Lucien Boissonnas for his help is preparing this and the following 23 catalogue entries of drawings by Töpffer
