Lot Essay

Jacob van der Horst was born in Schoonhoven in 1640. He became a master of the Amsterdam guild in 1668, where he remained until his death in 1694, the year in which this lot was made.

J. W. Frederiks attributes this basin to the monogramist HN, and compares it with two dishes bearing this monogram, one dated 1660, the other 1668 (op cit, vol. 1, pp. 237-239, nos. 154-155). However the present lot could not have been made by the maker of the above dishes as they both predate van der Horst's entry into the Amsterdam guild.
