A SILVER-MOUNTED IVORY EWER AND BASIN
J. D. Sohleißsner &Söhne, Hanau, circa 1880, bearing spurious Augsburg marks

The ewer on a circular base with silver gadrooned and foliate mounts, the stem formed as the figures of Pan and two Bacchante above a band of Bacchic tropies and foliage, the body carved with a Bacchic procession of Satyrs, Maenads and putti, holding thryes, tambourines, pan pipes and wine cups, the spout supported by a satyr and two putti holding a garland of fruit surrounding a bacchic mask, applied beneath the spout with silver goat head mount, the handle formed as a reclining Maenad and putto with silver foliage, putto and female mask terminals, the circular basin with with central silver boss chased with the scene of Hercules battling with the Nemean lion, carved with a broad frieze depicting the Triumph of Bacchus, with attendant Satyrs and Maenads, Silenus, Pan and Ariadne, the broad rim carved with further Bacchic scenes of putti drinking applied between with chased silver Bacchic trophies with herm supporters, with fluted borders, the basin fixed on wooden base.
