Provenance
Acquired by the present owner from Berta Burg, née Czuber (1879-1979), wife of Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria (younger brother of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand shot at Sarajevo) who, after his exclusion from the House of Habsburg due to his illegitimate marriage in 1911, adopted the name of Ferdinand Burg.

Lot Essay

Prince August of Prussia, born in 1779, a son of Frederick the Great's younger brother Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia, was an Infantry General and an Artillery Commander. He was the younger brother of Prince Louis-Ferdinand of Prussia (see lot 102). A friend of Madame de Stael, he was notorious for his desperate passion for Juliette Recamier.
