Lot Essay

Maria-Anna of Savoy (1803-1884), daughter of King Vittorio-Emanuele I of Sardinia (see lot 108), married the Hereditary Prince Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, in 1831. On his accession to the throne in 1835 as Ferdinand I of Austria, Maria-Anna became Empress, and, in 1836, Queen of Bohemia. Despite the fact that she never learned to speak the German language, she seems nevertheless to have been most popular in Austria.
