Lot Essay
Princess Marie-Thérèse of France (1778-1850), called Madame Royale, was the daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette (see lots 157 and 161). After the execution of her parents, she remained in captivity until 1795 when she was freed, at the order of her uncle Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire, in exchange of the liberation of French prisoners. Upon her arrival in Vienna, she was painted by Füger several times and her portraits were sent to French royalists all over Europe.
