Lot Essay

Marguerite-Élie Guadet (1758-1794) was elected deputy of the Gironde at the Assemblée législative in 1791, and became a member of the club of the Jacobins. After the condemnation of Louis XVI, he tried to obtain a stay of execution for the King, but due to the hostile attitude of Danton and Marat towards the Girondins, he was in danger of death himself. He left Paris and fled to Caen and finally to his birthplace Saint-Émilion where he hid at the home of his sister-in-law. He was caught and transported to Bordeaux where he was guillotined.
