Finely cast with a dragon and two karashishi in high relief on an archaic manji diaper ground, the phoenix-shaped handle attachment and dragon-head shaped feet, an elaborate finial modelled as oni on a mythical fish shachi among breaking waves, signed Ichijoken Joun, Meiji Period (1868-1912)

Lot Essay

Oshima Joun (1858-1940) learnt the techniques of lost wax casting from his father, Koichiro. He exhibited his works in various expositions including International Exposition in Paris in 1900 where he won a gold medal for one of his works
