Mary Mond was the second daughter of Alfred, 1st Lord Melchett. She was painted by Lavery at the age of eleven during a family winter holiday in Wengen over the Christmas of 1912-13. Lavery painted the family skating together and Mary is the central figure in the work which also depicts her brother, Henry Mond, 2nd Lord Melchett; their mother, Violet Mond, the 1st Lady Melchett, and Ena Mathias (nèe Wertheimer), their cousin
