Lot Essay

Christopher Wood first met Antonio Gandarillas, the Chilean diplomat, in Paris in 1921. Gandarillas was an honorary ambassador and well acquainted with Parisian society. He introduced Wood to Picasso and Cocteau and enabled him to travel around Europe. Gandarillas built a studio for Wood on the top-floor of his Cheyne Walk house and enrolled him at the Academie Julian and the Grande Chaumière, thus nurturing his artistic talent
