Lot Essay
Richard Shone comments on this lot 'A view from the 1st floor of 46 Gordon Square (the London home of Clive and Vanessa Bell) but after being abandoned by Grant circa 1920 the picture was worked on again at Charleston in 1945 and the window has similarities with the French doors of the sitting-room at Charleston which open onto the garden. The motif of an open window with interior still life and exterior landscape was one Grant treated frequently; there is a 1920-1 snow scene of Gordon Square with a jug on a table in the foreground, in an English private collection'
