Lot Essay

This tambua and the following two lots were sold in a provincial auction room in 1994 as "originally the property of the world famous ethnographic collector James Hooper". According to the saleroom they were consigned by one of his descendants. James Hooper is known to have given items to members of his family over a long period of time and the tambua could well have been consigned by their descendants.
