Lot Essay

The fish-legged figure and its related motifs led William Fagg to suggest the area arund Owo for the origin of this exceptionally fine board. An Eastern Yorubaland origin is reinforced by the exceptionally rich peripheral decoration. The fish-legged figure is important as a representation of the onile when it occurs on Ogboni paraphernalia, but is of uncertain significance in other connections.
