Lot Essay

Martin Dieterle has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work, identifying it as Ville-d'Avray. Gardeuse de Vaches dans une Clairière près de L'Etang (Robaut III, 2069). It was based on a study from nature completed by the artist in his studio. In later years, when the piece was sold to a Dutch collector, the cow behind the figure of the peasant-girl was painted over. However, during the 1920s the painting was restored to its original state, and the cow is once more visible.
