For Jörn Merkert, González's conception of Don Quichotte is one of the highpoints of his early work: "González conduit avec cette sculpture ses capacités sculpturales à un sommet stylistique dont il ne va acquérir la parfaite maîtrise qu'au cours d'évolution de son oeuvre." (J.Merkert, Julio González, Milan, 1987, p.80). Formally the sculptor contrasts the rigid, vertical forms of the lance with the hunched and bent shapes of Don Quichotte's back, neck and right arm. Viewed most effectively from the side, the linear and curvilinear forms encompass a large interior space, which may be interpreted as either volume or void. "Avec une grande sobriété et des formes extrêment concentrées, il réussit à donner ce sculpture une présence physique qui s'exprime par l'espace vide." (ibid.)
