DURANTI, Guillelmus (1237-1296). Rationale divinorum officiorum. Ulm: Johann Zainer, 18 March 1475.
Royal 2° (399 x 280mm). Collation: 1-310 410(7+1) 5-810 98 10-1310 14-158 16-2010 218 22-2510 266 278 (1/1 blank, 1/2 register, 1/4 text, 27/8r colophon, 27/8v blank). 256 (of 257, without blank 1/1) leaves. 50 lines, double column. Type: 1:116G. Woodcut border of vine and flowers with a jester, outline capitals, many painted over in red, foliation in red in most upper margins, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. Late 18th-century brown diced russia (slightly worn), Wodhull arms in gilt on front cover, marbled endpapers. Provenance: some contemporary annotations; Pierre Antoine Crevenna, cat. no. 286, when it was bound in old calf; Michael Wodhull, annotations on front flyleaf dated 1790, with the price (¨3.6.- ) and price of binding (19 shillings); Mount Stuart bookplate.
Although difficult to comprehend today, the significance of the Rationale may be judged in the context of its first appearance in print, being one of the earliest books printed at Mainz (1459). This is the seventh edition of the work, an indispensable compendium on the liturgy and guide to Church symbolism. With the variant in the colophon as noted by GW, and an isolated instance of printed foliation on 22/1. The skewed impression of the typepage on 8/1 demonstrates page-by-page printing. HC *6475; GW 9107; BMC II, 523 (IC. 9140); Goff D-408; Pellechet 4495; IGI 3619
