3 volumes, 12° (165 x 95mm). Collation: I: A-F12 G6 (-G6 blank); II: A-G12 H6 (A1 a cancel; - H6 blank); III: A-K12 (A1 a cancel). Vol.I with four section titles at A2, C9, F1 and F6. (Lacking final blanks in vols.I & II, vol.I with paperfaults in B1 and G1 and small rusthole in C3.) Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, morocco lettering-piece in one, a second stained black and lettered (joints slightly split). Provenance: R. Hottot (bookplate in vol.III, pencilled collation and note of purchase in 1935 in vol.I).
AN UNRECORDED FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF THE NOVELS OF VOLTAIRE. It pre-dates by one year the issue previously considered to be the first collected edition of the novels. A copy of the second issue, with the title dated 1764, is in the Bibliotheque Nationale and was examined by Bengesco (no. 1517), but it comprises only the first two volumes of this set. Although the names and location of the printers of the present work are not given, a study of their vignettes and ornaments, as well as the paper stocks, suggest that it was printed in France. (3)
