Lord Sunderland was appointed secretary of state for the Southern Department in 1706, with Addison as under-secretary. In 1708 Steele held a minor court position as gentleman-in-waiting to Prince George of Denmark. Steele married Mary Scurlock, known as 'Prue', in 1707. She preserved her husband's letters, over 400 of which were presented to the British Museum in 1787 by John Nichols.
