Nicolas Duchêne had published Voltaire's theatrical works in 1763/64, in five volumes. His widow undertook the publication of a new edition in six volumes (the 6th including new works). Voltaire began the revision of the Tragedies for her in the summer of 1767, and wrote to her implying that her late husband was to blame for the mistakes in the earlier edition ('J'en suis encor très mortifié; je tacherai de tout reparer, et de vous fournir de quoi donner une edition complete et correcte', published letter of 12 September 1767).

Published in Bestermann (D.14552).
