In 1772 Wieland published a political novel Der Goldene Spiegel, which influenced Anna Amalia to appoint him as a tutor to her sons and join the court at Weimar. The letter opens 'Liebes Mütterchen, wir sind hier bey Ihrer und unserer Herzogin, der einzigen und ewigen Königin unserer freyen Herzen, auf der hohen Ettersburg: und leben da fern vom Erdengetümmel, das selige Leben der Götter im Himmel, ausser dass es verd.. garstig unfreundlich Wetter ist'.
