These songs were composed between 21 December 1877 and 6 January 1878 as dated on the present manuscript and published in Prague in 1879.
Dvorák's Czech national style came into full fruition in 1878, the year of the Serenade for wind, the Sextet and the Slavonic Dances and Rhapsodies and is foreshadowed by the present set of songs for male voice choir.
The work is listed in Burghauser's thematic catalogue, no. 76, p.180-181.
