KRENEK, Ernst. Autograph letter signed to 'Verehte Gräfin', Mondsee, Schloss Almeida, 4 July 1937, referring to the first performance of Karl V and giving his news, blue black ink, 1 page, 4to (295 x 210mm).
Krenek writes that he is at Mondsee rehearsing the opera company for the forthcoming visit in the autumn to the United States. He is about to go to the Tyrol so that he can rest and compose before returning to Mondsee in mid August. He also asks the countess to send him a copy of his opera Karl V and gives her the news that it has been accepted for the German Theatre in Prague for May 1938 and hopes that she will attend.
The visit to America to which Krenek refers was his first. He went with the Salzburg Opera Guild, the company for which he adapted and orchestrated L'incoronazione di Poppea, and which he was rehearsing when he wrote this letter. Karl V, originally written for the Vienna Staatsoper but abandoned in 1934 because of the implied political nature of the work, was first performed in Prague on 22 June 1938, as Krenek writes.
