LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). FANTASIE DRAMATIQUE SUR LES HUGUENOTS DE MEYERBEER, Op.11, for piano, IMPORTANT CORRECTED PROOFS WITH AUTOGRAPH REVISIONS THROUGHOUT and including FOUR PAGES OF AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, plate no. 2136, Schlesinger, Berlin, c.1850, 30 pages plus title inscribed in orange pencil Huguenots, nouv. édition entièrement refaite, engraved throughout, 4 pages of manuscript in black ink, small library stamp in the lower lefthand corner, loose, folio (340 x 272mm.), (outer leaves slightly frayed in the margins), in buckram slip case.
This extensively revised proof and the substitution of four pages of new material make it the definitive text of a new version of Grande fantasie sur des thèmes de l'opéra Les Huguenots, originally composed in 1836 and published by Schlesinger in Berlin in 1837. The pages have been renumbered, probably by the printer, to run from 3 to 23. which corresponds with the second Schlesinger edition. The 1837 edition had 25 pages and there appears to be no edition of 31 pages.
The revisions comprise: the deletion of 2 complete bars on renumbered p.6 and the reworking of righthand chords in 3 bars; the deletion of printed directions on pp.12,15 and 18; alteration to fingering instructions on p.9 and the insertion of accidentals on pp.11 and 12 (in red ink); the notation in 2 bars written out in letters in the margin on pp.13 and 14; corrected accidentals in red ink and excised instructions in pencil on pp.15, 16 and 18; and the complete deletion in pencil of pp.20-28 (original numbering, so that the original p.29 is amended to read p.21).
The major revisions are the subsitution of 4 pages of new material on separate manuscript leaves with corresponding excisions and instructions in the proof and comprise:.
On p.10 (renumbered) 4 bars are deleted and a letter (a) in the margin keys to AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, 12 bars, 6 of which deleted, black ink, 1 page, folio.
On p.17, 9 bars are deleted in black ink with written instructions and the letter (B) above the first deleted bar keys to AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, 9 bars, of which the final bar reworked, black ink, ¾ page, folio.
On p.20, 8 bars are deleted in black ink and a letter C in the margin keys to AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, 18 bars, of which the first 3 are deleted with additional staves drawn freehand in the margin with further written instructions in the margins, black ink and pencil, 1 page, folio.
On p.23, deletion of 26 bars in pencil and a letter D in the margin keys to AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, 13 bars of which 2 bars deleted, with written directions, black ink and pencil, 1¼pp., folio.
