WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883). Autograph letter signed, Zurich, 26 September 1851 demanding payment for a performance of Tannhäuser immediately, annotated by the recipient, with numerous calculations on the second and third pages, black ink, 3 pages on a bifolium, 8vo (215 x 137mm). (slight tear at creases).
Wagner writes to a recipient he addresses as 'Hohegeboren' and bluntly says that he has already answered the question put to him when he sent the score with, yes, he would like the 'Schweriner' payment of 20 louis d'or for Tannhäuser sent immediately. He has already answered this question but has never heard any more.
The letter refers to the early production of Tannhäuser at Schwerin in 1852 and was written at the time of his Zurich exile when Wagner was in desperate need of an income, hence his insistence. He began to rely on opera houses wanting to perform Tannhäuser but his aniticipated earnings were not realised. As in the case of Schwerin, he received single payments of between 15 and 45 louis d'or for a performance. It is possible that the letter is addressed to an official of the court at Schwerin and the recipient has noted that the letter was received on 29 September 1851 and was replied to on the same day and that it was placed in copybook folio 12. Pages 2 and 3 of the bifolium are covered with detailed calculations.
