12° (150 x 85mm). Collation: A-F12. Soft-metal relief cut on title-page, and 13 cuts on wood and soft-metal in text. Modern half roan, gilt-ruled, stained black, black pebble-grain cloth sides. Provenance: Wm. T. Joyney 3rd September 1902 (inscription). This edition not in Wing. Preface "To the Christian Reader" is signed "Richard Day", the son of John Daye, who printed the earliest known edition in 1574. He writes of "this grave and godly Book" as "a Mirror for Princes, a Preacher for all Christians, a beautiful Glass for Women, for Children, Servants and such like..." -- [JOHNSON, Richard (1573-1659?)]. The Famous History of the Seven Champions of Christendom...Shewing their honourable battels by sea and land: the tilts, justs, turnaments, for ladies: their combats with gyants, monsters and dragons... The First [Second] Part. London, printed for R. Scot, Tho. Basset, Ric. Chiswell, M. Wotton, and G. Conyers, 1687. (Imprint taken from title-page of Part II.). 2 volumes, 4° (174 x 135mm). Collation: A-Y4; A-S4. 2 ptt. in one vol. Narrative printed in black letter, speeches, verse etc in roman (title-page to Pt.I defective. Contemporary sheep, (worn with some worming). Provenance: Miss Holwell (?) 1785. Parts I and II were entered in the Stationers Register to John Danter 1596. This Part I is either Wing J798A or J799 (date missing from title-page). This part II is not recorded by Wing, although he has a 1680 ed. printed by Scot. A Third Part was added in 1696 [Wing J804] long after Richard Johnson's death.
