The History of Little Goody Two Shoes;...with the means by which she acquired her learning and wisdom, and in consequence thereof her estate...see the original manuscript in the Vatican at Rome, and the cuts by Michael Angelo...London: printed by T. Carnan...n.d. (after 1783).
12° in sixes (115 x 75mm). Woodcut frontispiece within a fleuron border, and 32 woodcuts with similar borders in text. Original marbled paper over boards with original green glazed paper back (? an early prize binding?). Housed in a cloth board chemise in a morocco-backed box. Provenance: Priscilla Branwhite Prize Book for Spelling at Miss Tomsons Newmarket; Henry William Branwhite Lavenham: Catherine Muriel; Oppenheimer Collection. Roscoe J 167(15): A & M 66.
The first printing of the book as a 12°, resulting in the abandonment of the final "Appendix". Offsetting of the two main inscriptions on the front and back pastedowns suggests either that this copy had no free endpapers, or that the free endpapers were used as paste downs in the present, almost certainly contemporary, binding.
