WINLOVE, Solomon. Moral Lectures on the Following Subjects. Pride, envy, avarice [i.e. 28 humours listed in 2 columns]. By Solomon Winlove, Esq; Embellished with twenty-eight curious cuts. London : printed for F. Newbery...1769. 12° in sixes (110 x 70mm). [A4] B-I6 [Π.=A5-6]. Two chapters numbered XXIII, resulting in mis-numbering of final 5 chapters. 28 woodcut chapter headpieces depicting moral qualities. (Frontfree end paper detached; a number of leaf edges frayed or worn; stitching fragile). Dutch flowered paper over boards (very worn, lacking spine). Provenance: A. W. Stone. Roscoe J 382(1) citing 2 copies only. An early independent publication by Newbery's nephew. The final 2 leaves give his "Catalogue of Pretty Little Books for Children" which concludes with a list of "Medicines sold by F. Newbery". In 1769 therefore the nephew appears to have a continuing interest in his uncle's profitable drugstore trade. -- Juvenile Rambles through the Paths of Nature;...embellished with cuts. London: printed for E. Newbery...n.d. [1790]. 16° in eights (110 x 70mm). (lacking first leaf and end papers and fronispiece, many leaf edges ragged, corner of E1 torn with loss of text). Duch flowered paper over boards, (extremely worn, spine oversewn by a previous owner). Roscoe J 200(2), locating only the British Library copy. The preface is signed R.J. (i.e. Richard Johnson) but the text is taken from Sarah Trimmer's Introduction to the Knowledge of Nature (1780), much to Mrs. Trimmer's annoyance. (See typed note by Mrs. Moon with this copy.) -- Peter PUZZLEWELL. A Choice Collection of Riddles, Charades, Rebusses & c. chiefly original. By Peter Puzzlewell, Esq. London: printed for E. Newbery...1792. 12° in sixes (131 x 82mm). (Lacks front free endpaper.) Copper engraved frontispiece (chipped and torn at one edge). Pink glazed paper over boards, rubbed, with remains of a title label, back replaced by modern pink paper lettered in ink by Mrs. Moon (top board and first gathering starting). Provenance: Maria H. Bishop 1794. Roscoe J 311 (1). A previous owner - probably M. Bishop - has inscribed eleven (unanswered) riddles on the verso of the title-page. (3)
