Newbery...1796. 12° in sixes (170 x 96mm). Wood-engraved cartouche with engraver's name on the title-page, with 23 wood-engraved headpieces and tailpieces by John Bewick. Old tree calf (back messily repaired). Provenance: Rob. Synge. Roscoe J 39(2); Osborne II p.900. The Advertisement (A1) is dated Oct. 6th, 1796 and explains the delay since publication of the first edition (in 1789) as due to the severe indisposition of the artist: "And sorry, very sorry, are we to be compelled to state, that this is the last effort of his incomparable genius". This copy has bound in after the title-page a manuscript "Table of Vignettes" with a note by a previous owner.
