[KILNER, Dorothy (1755-1836)]. The Histories of More Children than One; or Goodness better than beauty...London: printed and sold by John Marshall and Co....n.d. [c.1785].
16° (100 x 84mm). Collation: Π4, A-L4 (lacking L3-4 [advertisements ?]; the first three gatherings in sixes [i.e. Π-C: D-F; G-I], the final gathering apparently a four). Wood engraved frontispiece and 21 framed wood engravings in text. Dutch flowered paper over boards (back a little frayed).
Presumably a second edition. Of four other copies known, three have three stories as their contents with seventeen illustrations, the fourth appears to correspond to this, with four stories and twenty-one illustrations in the text. From the eccentric make-up this appears to have been published as a hastily "improved" edition. On page 66 here, a previous owner (perhaps with a child who suffered from the disease) has changed the phrase "the girl has but one eye" to "the girl is marked with smallpox".
