The Discreet Princess. Seventh edition, corrected and adorned with fine cuts. London: printed for T. Boosey...1796. [There is a corresponding title-page in French.] 12° (160 x 96mm). Text in English and French en face; 4 numbered pages of advertisements at end. Frontispiece and 8 copper-engraved plates, signed Anderson. (Tears affecting text on F4 and I1, slighter tears elsewhere). Old sheep, morocco titling-piece on back (hinges weak) housed in a maroon linen board chemise and morocco-backed box. Provenance: Ann Hudson; Mary Ann ? ; Oppenheimer Collection. The illustrations are copied from those by S. Fokke, first published at the Hague in 1745, and are engraved by the American engraver, Alexander Anderson (1775-1870). The plates were apparently imported for this printing - a significant event, since it stands as one of the first contributions by the USA to a children's book published in Britain.
