Etched plate printed on one side of the sheet. 16 leaves, each with hand-coloured stipple illustration, caption and 5-line verse, incipit: There was an Old Woman named Towl. (Some spotting, one numeral cropped.) Modern boards (lacking the original printed paper boards). Provenance: M. M. Maxwell from Cousin Mary (inscription). THE EARLIEST KNOWN BOOK OF LIMERICKS, followed a couple of years later by a similar collection relating to Gentleman, which inspired Lear's Book of Nonsense.
