GAY, John (1685-1732). Fables...with a life of the author, and embellished with a plate to each fable. London: printed by Darton and Harvey, for F. & L. Rivington [and 17 others, including J. Johnson and E. Newbery]. 1793. 8° (215 x 125mm). Title-page, plate of Gay's monument, and 33 further inserted plates, depicting 50 fable subjects in Part I and 16 in Part II, engraved and etched on copper, 2 signed G. Neagle. (The two parts are not noticed on the title-page and have continuous pagination.) Full speckled calf (re-backed, with a new morocco title label). Provenance: William G. Lewis. The gift of Mrs. Wainwright [bis] 1810. Roscoe A 175(6). An edition which derives from the two-volume Fables by Gay published by John Stockdale also in 1793. Stockdale's oblong plates (some engraved by William Blake) are here copied, and sometimes reversed, as ovals, but no formal connection between the two editions has been ascertained. Although the book was only printed, and not published, by Darton and Harvey, they occupy a prominent place on the title-page, above the conger. -- Maria HACK (1777-1844). [i.e. Elizabeth Barton Hack, the author's daughter]. (Title-page lacking in volume IV.) Full polished calf, each volume with blind-stamped scallop design within double fillets gilt, backs five-panelled gilt with title and volume labels by Povey and Bailey of Wotton (binder's ticket) (bottom of spine chipped in volume I). First published in 4 volumes in 1818; this, the undesignated second edition, was published 1819-20 as described. -- Thomas DAY (1748-1789). The History of Sandford and Merton, abridged from the original...embellished with elegant plates. London: printed for Darton, Harvey and Darton...1818. 12° (138 x 83mm). Frontispiece and 5 (of 6) numbered plates engraved on copper (lacking plate 3). Original green roan-backed drab boards (spine cracked and chipped). Provenance: Andrew H.
