Details
The Deceitful Wolf; or, the history of little Red Riding Hood. Darton and Son, Holborn. n.d. [c.1832].
24° (117 x 78mm). Collation: [A.2], the first and last leaves pastedowns. Wood engraved frontispiece, woodcut title-page vignette, 8 woodcuts in text. Original chalked yellow wrappers with woodcuts on upper and lower covers.
A rare example, in near mint condition, of the unrecorded series of chapbooks and tracts which Darton and Son put out some time after 1830. The traditional text has been re-cast "near a village called Roseville, in the south of France" and padded out to fill the 23 pages. Several of the illustrations are stock-blocks and highly irrelevant.
