12° (138 x 225mm). 26 fine hand-coloured engraved plates by Charles Knight, 2 leaves of engraved music. Original printed card wrappers (worn), modern morocco-backed cloth box.

FIRST EDITION. "The identity of 'R.R.' is uncertain. 'R.Ransom' has been suggested but I have not found out why. Another candidate is Richard Roe, stenographer, writer and bass singer, who died in 1853... The full-page illustrations are elegant and very prettily coloured. Each one, in an octagonal frame, represents a young boy in a landscape clasping a large letter of the alphabet, almost as bis as himself": Moon T-138 (1).
