Bentley 171. The first typographic printing of the Songs in a presentation edition from the brother of J. J. G. Wilkinson, the book's editor. In the first issue "the Little Vagabond" was printed, but this was subsequently cancelled, as here. -- With James MONTGOMERY (1771-1854) ed. The Chimney-Sweeper's Friend, and Climbing-Boy's Album...arranged by James Montgomery with illustrative designs by Cruikshank. London: printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1824. 8° (172 x 100mm). Wood-engraved frontispiece and one full page wood engraving by George Cruikshank. Full polished calf, gilt fillets, 6-panelled back, gilt with two morocco titling-labels, gilt dentelles, marbled paper endpapers by J. Larkins (bookbinder's stamp). Provenance: J. L. and E. B. One of the most important indictments of the trade in climbing boys, incorporating the first typographic printing of William Blake's "The Chimney-Sweeper", "communicated [with slight alterations] by Mr. Charles Lamb, from a very rare and curious little work".
