Note. The Canongate Concert Hall was opened in 1764 and flourished until 1766 when it was closed due to a great extent from the violence of the public.

This theatre as were all such places of entertainment were illegal although the principal dignitories of the law were its proprietors. This collection of pamphlets describes the debate between various interested parties upon a petition for a patent which was being sent to Parliament. This was eventually sucessful in the opening of the
canongate Theatre Royal in 1766.
