WILLIAM STEEL - Rated as one of the greatest Scottish Inside-Forwards of all time, William "Billy" Steel is recalled as a tough little man with a ferocious shot, a superb footballing brain and limitless bounding vitality. As a perfectionist, he was prone not to suffer gladly the shortcomings of less-gifted colleagues. Born in Denny, Stirlingshire in 1923, Steel's career began with Junior sides Dunipace Thistle and Bo'ness Cadora before joining the Leicester City ground staff in 1939. That same year, he moved to St. Mirren, still as an amateur. His first professional position was with Morton in 1941, the (15,500 paid for his services by Derby County in 1947 represented a then record fee. Steel is perhaps best associated with Dundee whom he joined in 1950 for another record fee of (17,500. In 1954 he emigrated to America and played from 1956, for Los Angeles Danes and then Hollywood F.C. Steel died in 1982. The following five lots were awarded to WILLIAM STEEL (see also lot 139)
