Lot Essay

This golf ball marker was removed from Tom Morris's workshop in St. Andrews and is sold by a direct descendent of Tom Morris.

The first gutta percha golf balls were smooth and it was realised that they flew better only after being 'cut'. Thereafter gutty balls were produced by hand hammering the exterior to improve flight. For a very brief period various hand-operated devices were produced to mark the gutty ball before the advent of hydraulic machinery. Two similar examples are in the British Golf Museum at St. Andrews
