wood engravings printed in sanguine, 1945, on Arches laid paper, title, text, justification and set of 38, of which sixteen hors-texte, the rest en-texte vignettes, signed in pencil on the justification, copy number 63 from the edition of 200 (there was also an hors commerce edition of 20), the full sheets as published, slight discoloration and very occasional foxmarks, otherwise in very good condition, loose in paper wrappers with embossed title and embossed gold leaf illustration on the front, within orange paper-covered boards and slipcase edged in brown linen, with printed title label on spine
overall S. 345 x 265mm.

Lot Essay

In Les Idylles the artist first explored the medium of woodcut. The sculptural quality of the prints are ideally suited to accompany a classical text - here the bucolic poems of Theocritus, written in the third century B.C.
