Lettres portugaises is a series of five letters written by a Portugese nun to an unfaithful man with whom she had fallen in love.

'Quinze visages de religieuses accompagnées d'une légende manuscrite de quelques mots extraits du texte composent une suite admirable où la pureté initiale du visage de la religieuse semble évoluer au fil des passions très violentes qui la traversent. Visages où se composent la féminité et l'amour résumant peut-être ainsi les préoccupations les plus profondes de Matisse dessinateur' (Hommage à Tériade, p. 124-5).
