Since the attitude and characterisation of this figure are considerably more rustic that that of the other model of a Birdcatcher generally agreed to be by Giambologna, it is now widely thought not to have been his invention. There is no doubt, however, that it was created as a pendant to the Giambologna Birdcatcher, possibly by a northern artist, and numerous paired examples of the bronzes are known.
